MYSTERY THREE: 
why build a brand?
On the 1stof October (same day Nigeria celebrated her independence), I posed several interesting questions in a bid to explore the success and erstwhile failure of the biggest brands you know [indomie, Gtb e.t.c], posited that thinking the ‘logo is the brand, ‘branding is new’ and ‘branding is packaging’ are all myths, and I gave a teaser on Nokia.
On the 5thof October, we looked into the origin of brands, the two categories of endangered brands and the reason why Nokia is currently trailing Tecno in Nigeria’s mobile phone market. The winner for the week was revealed wile 4 questions were rolled out for the new week.
On the 12thof October, we compared building a brand to building a house since both involves drawing a plan, build a structure and then strengthening it. We delved into the powerful brand secrets of Channels TV (a strong plan to focus on just news) Indomie (a promise kept) and GTB’s strength (attributable to undeniable innovation and a scintillating brand presence). Adedeji Damilare was crowned champion and temporarily ‘banned’ from participating in this week’s quiz.

Whats my point?
I believe these billion-dollar brands provide answers to today’s million dollar mystery: why build a brand?
To ease the distillation of today’s juice down your esophagus, I have masterfully crafted an acronym: SPSS

S: SELLING GET’S EASIER
Why did Apple sell 9M phones the same weekend RIM declared almost $1 billion in losses?
That’s a question I asked on the 1st of October. Well, here’s why: Apple is branded. Plain simple.
As I noted on the 5th of October, Apple, started manufacturing iPhones in 2007 and has only made 8 models as against Nokia’s 494 phones in 21 years!

Imagine, one of the world’s most innovative and most profitable company only manufactures 5 core products! That could only be branding. Focus is one key strength of Apple: it does few things excellently rather than doing a lot of things haphazardly. It’s much easier to make the world’s best laptop if you only make one type. Can you compare an Apple Mac with, say, a Dell? Would it be…?

Finally on Sales:
Shoprite is doing beautifully well in Africa & Nigeria too! It sells everyday products at ridiculously low prices in very ‘tush’ stores! I totally fell in love with the Palms outlet of Shoprite the very first time! It’s easier to sell when you are that branded. Period.

Despite the eternal benefits of branding, most small scale and quite a number of large scale businesses in Nigeria have poor visual branding (terrible logo designs, horrible business cards, local letter head, bad posters, Facebook covers, bill boards, flex banners, websites e.t.c) and very poor brand strategies (most don’t have a definite niche, well defined brand, well named brand, a solid business plan/proposal, beautifully promoted brands, good brand value and well-defended brands (which is why close-up was able to ‘steal’ the show from Macleans).
As a reader of this piece, do not fall into the same trap!
