why build a brand?
On Saturday, I kicked off our enquiry into the reasons why we must build brands by masterfully crafting an acronym: SPSS, and we learnt that Selling gets easier. Here’s todays piece of the pie:
P: PROFITS ROLL IN FASTER
It’s almost logical to conclude that profits will follow as long as sales kick in but that is a fallacy. For example: Hero Honda Motors may be high on sales figures but is into its third successive drop in quarterly net profits. Most of the profits from high sales are eaten up with high raw material costs and one-time expense.
One more thing:
Except you are ready to become another Shoprite or Walmart, drastically reducing the prices of your goods/services may bring in sales in the short term but not meaningful profit in the long term. You need a powerful brand whose cutting edge/selling point is not just price.
A good example of such a strong brand raking in strong profit is Google:

I bet you have used Google today [or at least, yesterday] so we can both agree that Google is another word for search.We have other search engines in yahoo, ask, bing et.c but they get ignored like ugly ducklings! Profit is what you make when a simple but powerful brand is what you have. Google = Search. Powerful!
I opine that Microsoft’s search engine (bing by the way, just in case you’ve never used it) will struggle for a long, long time because it is just a me-too brand that is more concerned about wrestling power from Google than really delivering excellent search results to end users. So much for Bing! Bingo?
In Nigerian banking, as I noted last week, GTB is raking in serious profit because it has a powerful brand. Governments may have accounts with Zenith right now but as long as youths will one day grow up to lead this country (and I say a big fat amen not minding the same fat bellied, bald headed octogenarians calling the shots since 1960), those accounts may be switched to GTB in the nearest future. Why? Youths love GTB!

Despite the eternal benefits of branding, most small scale and quite a number of large scale businesses in Nigeria have poor visual branding (terrible logo designs, horrible business cards, local letter head, bad posters, Facebook covers, bill boards, flex banners, websites e.t.c) and very poor brand strategies (most don’t have a definite niche, well defined brand, well named brand, a solid business plan/proposal, beautifully promoted brands, good brand value and well-defended brands (which is why close-up was able to ‘steal’ the show from Macleans).
As a reader of this piece, do not fall into the same trap!
