MYSTERY THREE:
why build a brand?
On Saturday, I kicked off our enquiry into the reasons why we must build brands by masterfully crafting an acronym: SPSS, and we learnt that branding makes profit roll in faster yesterday. Here’s todays piece of the pie:

TODAYS LESSON:
S: SURVIVAL GETS LONGER
You would expect a 127 year old to look rumpled, be crippled, toothless and most likely have expired in the grave right now but not my coke! Coca-cola is 127 years old!
Branding is definitely responsible for Coca-cola’s vibrant market dominance. There’s a coke bill board on almost every major highway, a Coke advert running on at least one station in any nation at any given day and Coke reminds us all of open happiness. How cool!
Coke’s brand strategy is very offensive, though creative. Coke buys up rival brands before they outshine it (for starters, it owns Aquarius, Bacardi Mixers, Bacardi Premium Mixers, Beverly
Bright And Early, caffeine free Coke light/Diet Coke, Coca-Cola & several other leading brands around the world) and spends a ton of cash on creative advertising each year. Little wonder Coke is still ahead of Pepsi in the international market. By the way, I’m not a fan of Pepsi’s ‘live for now’ campaign featuring Nicki Minaj. Though Nicki has super-star status, Pepsi just burnt some money because the concept is totally vague, unemotional and uninspiring [***yawns!]
In Nigeria, First bank is still very much around. In fact, it is the country’s largest bank by assets despite being founded in 1894! First bank has survived every single banking reform and is yet to need any rescue effort to survive or thrive. I think First bank’s visual hammer (the logo of the Elephant) is extremely appropriate for such a rock-solid organization. Cheers to the leadership of First bank!
N.B: Consider advertising as the defense budget of any leading brand. Mess with it and get hurt.
Tomorrow, we’ll borrow some grammar from the eternally abundant arsenal of the ever sagacious & undoubtedly boisterous Hon. Patrick as we take on the last ‘S’.
Trust me on this one: you don’t to miss:
S: SIGHT BECOMES CLEARER
TO WRAP THINGS UP FOR TODAY:
S: SELLING GET’S EASIER [APPLE & SHOPRITE]
P: PROFITS ROLL IN FASTER [GOOGLE & GTB]
S: SURVIVAL GETS LONGER [COCA-COLA & FIRST BANK]
S: SIGHT BECOMES CLEARER
WAIT: CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT…
Despite the eternal benefits of branding, most small scale and quite a number of large scale businesses in Nigeria have poor visual branding (terrible logo designs, horrible business cards, local letter head, bad posters, Facebook covers, bill boards, flex banners, websites e.t.c) and very poor brand strategies (most don’t have a definite niche, well defined brand, well named brand, a solid business plan/proposal, beautifully promoted brands, good brand value and well-defended brands (which is why close-up was able to ‘steal’ the show from Macleans).
AS A READER OF THIS PIECE,
DO NOT FALL INTO THE SAME TRAP BECAUSE…
Every penny and every second you spend building your brand (whether visual or otherwise) is more than worth it. And that’s where I come in: I help individuals and companies with their visual brand needs especially to identify their core strengths, differentiate it from the existing market, narrow the focus, over-promise and over-deliver.
And With your help we can clarify your vision, leverage your passion and together, we can build a formidable, lovable and profitable brand for you, for your business: with strategic action!
