It is a well-known fact that entrepreneurs are workaholics who will go extra miles to achieve their set goals and objectives. They’re always occupied with many things, ranging from honing their preconceived business ideas, attending business meetings and pitching to investors to striking the next deal with a prospective client. They channel all of their energy into building their business empire which must thrive against all odds in a competitive environment. However, success (and even failure) as an entrepreneur comes at a price.
More often than not, long hours, intense stress and extreme work-habits affect their state of health and fitness negatively. The Nigerian entrepreneur does not have to exchange his health for wealth. Both are capable of mutual existence without having to neglect either.

Your health is perhaps the single most decisive factor on how long you will live and possibly how long you will continue to stay in business. Many busy entrepreneurs agonize over the fact that their schedule doesn’t allow them time to live healthily. This should not be the case. Any entrepreneur should be healthy enough to enjoy their wealth and wealthy enough to enjoy good health. And because we walk the talk, we have 7 super tips to help you enjoy the best of both worlds.

Give yourself SOME time out

The average entrepreneur spends more time with his gadgets than with 3 of his closest friends. This is so not cool. Once in a while, try to zone out and spend quality time doing healthy activities like…going on an outing with loved ones, hitting the gym or the pool for that swimming you’ve been planning to do for a long time now: the list is endless. You could set out to block a particular day on your calendar as a ‘no BBM’ or ‘GOOGLE’ day. Yes there will be emergencies but think of how many times you have told yourself this and of the benefits you will get from it.

Instead of 5 instant messaging platforms on your device. You can stick with 2 at most and still not miss out on any action.

It is also good to know that there are apps like the drugs.com app that provides you with reliable information about a particular medication in the case of an ailment. With this app you can create a personal drug list to keep tabs on the medications you’ve been ingesting over a period of time. Also, there’s HealthTap. It provides you with over 60,000 real doctors and more than 100 specialist insight on any given medical case. It’s your go-to virtual medical advisory board.

There are thousands ways to stay fit as a busy entrepreneur. The game changer is in the ease of execution and the benefit is in the doing. Your litmus test is not when you sign up for a gym membership, but on whether you are able to pull through with the program. There’s no need to go complex, just keep it simple.

Go for group trainings. You know it can be quite cool to go for a morning jog with a fellow busy professional….Super! It will be a catalyst to closing a deal or cementing a long term business partnership. Have you tried scheduling your meeting outside the office before? Why not fix your next meeting at the gym during your work out session? It’s a pretty good way to make productive use of your time while you achieve more fitness. That’d definitely be a quick win. Whether it’s a marathon race organized to raise money for charity, or simply an endurance trek to mark an anniversary, this type of workout does a great deal to boost your general fitness level . You should do a lot of it during your weekends.

There are also many smartphone apps that you can use to achieve your fitness goals, thanks to advancement in science and technology. These apps have been designed to allow you modify workout schedules, track your workout improvements or simply tell us the suitable routine relevant to our fitness level.

If you can’t get a couple of work friends of yours to do a few runs every weekend, you can join a movement like Truppr and chances are that you’d form meaningful bonds with other entrepreneurial folks like you.

Including fruits in your daily diet brings a lot of great results when you are aiming at staying healthy. You can shun the voices of eat-in restaurants and fast food once in a while. There are organic stores that sell packaged fruits that are as delightful in appearance as well as in the stomach. How long will you keep feeling guilty whilst devouring a bowl of ice cream? You know you can do it. You can also arrange a fruit mix for yourself to take to work. Aside from keeping you healthy and fit, did you know that fruits like strawberries are natural teeth whiteners due to their vitamin c content? This means spending a thousand bucks on them can help clear away plaque and tooth stains which your dentist does for about 50 times the price. Talk about saving money yet living large with a smile!

Fund a pet project

Being an entrepreneur can be  overwhelming.  We all need something to get our juices on high mode and this could be, to do stuffs that we love. Maybe you’ve always wanted to be a fashion designer. Go ahead and design those flared skater skirts. This will release a healthy dose of much needed feel good hormones.

Many great businesses have been birthed via this route in time past. Also, you can invest in that perfume fetish of yours and even go ahead to create a healthy revenue stream for yourself. Once an entrepreneur, always an entrepreneur.

Reward yourself

A huge part of our business pursuits is domiciled here. We love to be rewarded. However, we often seek rewards externally. We hope that men (industry superiors, colleagues, mentees) will notice how much we have served and reward us in one form or the other.

Friend, go ahead and reward yourself. Set a personal target for the quarter that you can viciously achieve and then reward yourself by getting yourself a couple of designer grey suits. Now imagine you have a fitness goal of say dropping 30 pounds in 2 months such that you can fit into that suit. You have obviously created a compelling and achievable goal which is a win-win if you ask me. Travel to places like Dubai as a reward for executing that project in record time. This kicks you right off the ‘nobody appreciates me’ whining mode.  This is a welcome excuse to escape the buzz of Lagos and go somewhere close to nature that can help you reflect whilst strolling barefoot on a beach with plenty of nutritious sea foods on display.

Embark on humanitarian activities after executing a marketing campaign. You can do this with your team in other to give to the social and economic development of ailing local communities. Your goal of improving the welfare of your target population rubs off on you in the long run, trust me. This is a favorite of billionaire entrepreneur, Bill Gates. Goodness, doesn’t he look agile for his age?

Get Enough Sleep

The need to have adequate sleep can never be over-emphasized. It allows you to start the next day more lively and energetic. More importantly, it prevents your body from getting a high blood pressure which is a risk factor for heart attack and stroke. It is recommended to sleep for at least 7 hours per day. Skipping it is a career suicide.

Ensure you take power naps. They have the ability to recharge your brain during a tedious day at work. It reduces stress, improves your reaction time and increases efficiency. In fact, studies show that an average of 20 minutes of nap in the afternoon provides a magical effect on the body. That’s why it’s called a power nap.
Avoid office drama

Don’t underestimate the effect of this on your health. There’s absolutely no need for power struggle with your team mates. If a discussion is heading for the fight zone, dial the talk again later number or simply walk away. Similarly, you need to come to terms with the fact that you can’t alter people who don’t want to be altered. Really, you can’t. Learn to sip things through the chalice of joy. This isn’t easy but necessary for your health and that of your business. Finally, a lot of office stress is extinguished via setting systems and processes. Let everyone’s role be clearly defined and work towards achieving yours assiduously. There’s really no time to dwell on pettiness when money needs to be made and value created. No time to waste time.
The tips outlined above are practical and can be done if you are determined. Now that you know, you no longer have any excuses; you can pay more attention to your health now. Endeavour to go all out to keep yourself fit and healthy as you are also striving to keep your business going and growing.
