Abiola Adeyemi Ajimobi is a Yoruba politician born on the 16th of December 1949. He hails from Oyo State in the Southwest. He was formerly the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company, a subsidiary of Shell Petroleum before he left the oil sector in 2002 after 26 years, and was elected in 2003 as a Senator of the Republic of Nigeria representing Oyo South Senatorial District on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy. He was a principal officer in the Senate, serving as the Deputy Minority leader of the Senate. Thus, his political career started. Today, he’s the Governor of Oyo state.
Governor Ajimobi has been infamous for his ungubernatorial languages to people. The continued desecration of the office of the governor with his garrulous statements and pettiness in attitude is worrisome to the whole world. It has been said that a leader who does not respect his subjects, over whose backs he rode to power, deserves no respect himself. Governor Abiola Ajimobi spoke to the students of Ladoke Akintola University and their colleagues who visited his office during a peaceful protest to demand the reopening of their institution jointly owned by Oyo and Osun states. What followed was a public display of executive arrogance and tyranny.
Governor Ajimobi’s reaction to the protesting students, whose destiny have been possibly put on a pause mode shows his spite and disregard to the plight of the common man and his sense of entitlement to accolades that are not commensurate to his performance in office.
These students demanded what is theirs by right. They protested the irresponsibility of their University’s governing board and the eight (8) months strike suffered so far? And these are his words
“So? What is eight months? Is it the first time a school is going on strike? ” “Oya, go and do your worse, I’m ready for you!” . “What I want now is this, as you’ve come, you should plead. Was it I who closed your school?
‘ah oga, they’ve shut our school, governor o…[students cut in]’…
Is this one a student, you there? It’s a pity! [Chuckles derisively]… You know what? With your behavior, I am not going to talk to you again, okay? So, if you want to do anything, go and do it. We will wait for you … We were at an excecutive meeting and I came out… Isn’t this all of you? How many are you … This is the constituted authority for Oyo State. Even if I don’t pay salary or I don’t do this, the fact remains that I am the constituted authority and nothing can remove that authority.”
Ajimobi asked that the students be respectful of the authority he represents even if that authority fails them over and over again? The Governor even ordered the Nigerian police at the venue to fetch him a student who was expressing himself.
Ajimobi’s administration claimed to be transparent, accountable and have respect for the rule of law and yet, they denied the people the major tool they need to access information and justify the true colour of his administration. His administration finds it difficult to domesticate the Freedom of Information (FOI) act in Oyo State.
During the 2016 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Dr. Demola Aremu, the National Treasurer of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, said it was sad that government was allowing the workforce to languish in abject poverty despite the nation’s huge resources. He and some labour leaders decried the hardships being experienced by workers in the state due to unpaid salaries.
Governor Ajimobi went to the Olympics jamboree in London with 15 aides. But according to the Oyo governor’s spokesperson, these individuals were selected and shipped to London by the governor to attend three separate exhibitions for “foreign investors”. Mr. Adedayo said, “A team that follows the governor comprises of officials who were carefully selected to represent all the sectors and ministries relevant to the numerous engagements”. But the question on the mouth of people is, Why is it that the governor and his ‘aides’ are seeking international investors for a project made for small-scale industrialists and wasting most of the funding pool on overheard costs? What is the business of his Chief of Staff in the parley in London and what is the role of the governor’s wife in the investment negotiations in London? She was also alleged to have made over 53 trips to London and other overseas countries within a year. We guess these are part of his reasons why he said he’s a constituted authority.
