Meet the Creative Group: Redefining the Africa tech space alongside MIT and other tech gurus

Here is the Kumasi-based energy start-up, making huge strides in the technology scene in Ghana. We’re pretty sure you’ll be inspired as much as we were.

What inspired the its creation?

Jorge Appiah, the founder of Creativity group, and his friends were not new to the practically handicapped educational system that tested your memory and not your understanding. Unlike other people, Jorge did not follow the “No Action, Talk Only (NATO)” formula, but he wanted to be the change he wished to see in Africa.The Creativity Group is a result of his brave endeavor.



Whats the Creative Group about?

Creativity Group is a student association composed of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) students who are eager to spear-head innovative and technological advancements in communities and Ghana as a whole. Its membership is drawn from students in all faculties and departments who love to apply the theoretical aspect of their academic work. Her sole objective is to help the next generation of engineers and scientist; equip members with adequate practical knowledge which will help them solve problems in their various communities, help improve academic performance of members and inspire members to take up challenges in their communities.


The Creative Team
Creativity group is an open group to all students of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. Its composition varies from engineering, science and social science and its membership status is currently about 100 students; from freshers to finalists! The group has a few ladies as members, however, its trying to recruit more females, as part of the effort to increase the participation of women in Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) fields.

Sustainability, her watchword

Creativity Group seeks to create a collaborative, interdisciplinary platform for undergraduate students who are eager to use their knowledge to innovate and use technology as a tool, to solve problems in communities for social interventions and sustainable development. For Creativity Group, the main objective is to use innovation and technology to solve problems in communities for social interventions and sustainable development. This streamlines and defines majority of the projects they work on and plan to do. Also, they do their best to define the sustainability parameters for each of projects. They believe it is only by defining these parameters that a project is on the right path to achieve its potential impact. For them, a project has to be sustainable to be worth the time, energy and resources pumped into it. Her plan for the future is to change a lot of the things we do not like around us. They are on the verge of causing a revolution, a revolution in ways of thinking and perception on innovation, entrepreneurship and technology for development.


Creativity Group was founded in 2010 and operates a hybrid business model with a speculated budget between $10,000 – $50,000. The company has since gulped major awards as the Best Innovative project -TRATECH 2014 for Smart Trash Bin and Second Runner-up for Community Service Awards 2014




Notable Partnerships with the Companymit

Ghana Fab Lab – A fabrication lab established by the MIT Fab foundation to promote fabrication and making as a tool for innovation and development. The lab help provide our members the opportunity for the to learn hands-on practical works, fabrication and making. Currently, we do not have our own lab with advance tools and machinery as the Fab Lab.

Ghana Engineering Student Association – the umbrella body of all engineering student in Ghana. Our partnership is to collaboratively promote innovation and creativity among the engineering student.


Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA – currently working on using traditional symbols and designs to teach high schools students computing through a program called Creative Computing.

Ghana Education Service-South Ga District – collaborating on a project to promote hands-on science practical among Junior High schools. The project is titled Hack science Lab. The Company focus areas were ICT for Agriculture, Technology for Entrepreneurship and Business modeling, Traffic control and Monitoring, Social Media for Good, Smart Drainage system, Improvement of Mobile money processing and service, Incubation for Premature births, Energy efficiency and ICT for Rural Development.

Judging the present achievement of the Creative Group’s revolution with the radicality and intensity of their energy, how do you see them reshaping Africa in years to come?
